Kilimanjaro Trekking Routes. Our personal favorites

MARANGU ROUTE

NO. OF DAYS: 6

PRICE FROM: $2567 /PERSON/ DAY

Marangu is the most popular route taken by trekkers to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro. It takes you at a gentle pace through forests, moorlands, and then across a high-altitude desert called the Saddle towards the Summit at Uhuru Point. It is generally a less expensive route to take and gives you the chance to hit the summit in five days, although some people do prefer an extra day for acclimatization. One of the main differences of this route is that it offers hut accommodation, a feature not available on other climbing routes.

However, the availability of the hut needs early reservations.

LEMOSHO ROUTE

NO. OF DAYS: 8

PRICE FROM: $2880 /PERSON/ DAY

This is the most remote route to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro. After taking you through beautiful forests and moorlands, it crosses the Shira Plateau to meet up with the Machame Route. The South Circuit is then followed, offering superb views of the Southern Ice fields, past the Barranco Hut, and then on to Barafu and the summit. This is the only route that you will be able to see the three peaks of Kilimanjaro (Shira, Mawenzi and the Kibo peek here the summit is).

The route can be done in seven or eight days. We recommend the eight days as it gives you more time to acclimatize and leave you relaxed and enjoy the trekking all the time

UMBWE ROUTE

NO. OF DAYS: 6

PRICE FROM: $2405 /PERSON/ DAY

Umbwe route is one of the most challenging routes to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The route can be done in five, six, or seven days. We recommend it to be done in six or seven days so as clients can stay at Baranco for acclimatization and then they can go to lava tower the next day which is 4600m.

This route follows a forested ridge to the moorlands, and then traverse below the southern ice field to reach the Barafu Route which is followed to the summit.

RONGAI ROUTE

NO. OF DAYS: 7

PRICE FROM: $2405 /PERSON/ DAY

This route is considered by many as the easiest route to reach the Summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The route ascends from the north-eastern side of the mountain, along the border between Tanzania and Kenya and offers a different perspective due to its unspoiled wilderness and natural beauty. The trekking can be done in six or seven days.

MACHAME

NO. OF DAYS: 6

PRICE FROM: $2170 /PERSON/ DAY

The route begins from the south, then heads east, traversing underneath Kilimanjaro's southern ice field before summiting. Widely known as the "Whiskey" route, the Machame route is now the most popular route compared to the famous Marangu route, but unlike Marangu hiking days on Machame are longer and walks are steeper.

These geographical characters make Machame route a difficult climb route, a playground considered for more adventurous folks and those with some history on similar experiences like hiking or backpacking. Marangu has now become an inevitable romantic challenge for the world to take. No wonder it took over the easy-going Marangu route.

It is an inevitable adventure! No doubt, it is the first idea for a safari for the more athletic personalities. But Anne Lorimor(89) broke the world record as the oldest climber to summit Mount Kilimanjaro in 2019. Standing at 5895 meters above sea level, one does not need to be an experienced mountain climber to reach the Uhuru peak - it takes a fit and healthy state, with a stable all-round condition. To highlight, the youngest climber to the summit is Coaltan Tanner of the USA, who made it to the top of Kilimanjaro at just six(6) years old. With strong willpower and a little bit of luck, our trekking team of experts supported by a standby emergency medical helicopter evacuation team from our insurance provider will complete your trekking crew ready to conquer Kilimanjaro off your bucket list.

KILIMANJARO CLIMB WITH GLADIOLA ADVENTURE

To summit Mt. Kilimanjaro is through 5 routes. The most easy - the Marangu route, Umbwe, Rongai, Lemosho, and Machame route - the most popular. Due to Mt. Kilimanjaro's proximity to the equator, the Kilimanjaro region does not experience the extremes of winter and summer weather but rather, dry and wet seasons. Therefore when planning to climb Kilimanjaro with ease, target the warmest and driest months of the year(see table below) and also keep a note that the number of days for the summit will also depend on the route you take.

This short film(left) by Laurence Hills presents the beauty of Kilimanjaro's ecological zones breathtakingly.

Safety and Insurance

Gladiola Adventure has partnered with Kilimanjaro Search and Rescue (SAR), a helicopter rescue operation that conducts, modern, and efficient rescue services on Kilimanjaro. Airbus AS 350 B3 helicopters waits nearby at Moshi Airport. Once a distress call is received, rescue procedures start within five minutes. Expert pilots, highly trained rescue doctors, and emergency flight technicians are exceptionally qualified and prepared for all emergencies on the mountain.

Kilimanjaro SAR also manages a medical clinic that focuses on high altitude-related illnesses, mountain medicine, and trauma. It is staffed 24 hours a day by physicians, nurses, and assistants offering the best possible treatment. This group of professionals is advised by a unique Clinical Advisory Team made-up of top-level medical, and high-altitude professionals.

Please note: This service is only available to clients who have the required travel insurance. Special travel insurance is mandatory to participate in our trips. Clients must be covered to trek at high altitudes up to 6,000 meters to qualify for Kilimanjaro SAR rescue. We will have to verify your travel insurance before the attempt.

When to climb Kilimanjaro

What is the best time to climb Kilimanjaro?

The best time to climb Kilimanjaro tends to be the warmest and driest months of the year(see table right) due to Kilimanjaro's proximity to the equator giving the Kilimanjaro region only dry and wet seasons.

Why should you care?

The primary concern here is safety, the effects of rain, mud, snow, ice, and cold on a physically demanding activity like trekking can be very challenging to some travelers. Correspondingly, your chances of a successful summit also increase significantly with supportive weather conditions. Of course, the routes get crowded with more foot traffic during these periods as well.
